Hamburg European Open

Hamburg
The oldest of Germany’s international tennis championships was founded in 1892, 132 years ago, and held on the grounds of the “Eisenbahnverein auf der Uhlenhorst” (Uhlenhorst Railway Club). From 1898 to 1901, the matches were held in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe. Beginning in 1924, the facility at Rothenbaum in the Harvestehude district became the tournament’s permanent location. In 2009 the event was downgraded from Masters 1000 to an ATP World Tour 500 event. According to tournament officials, this seriously hinders its ability to attract top-ranking players, likelier to participate in tournaments that earn them more points.
