The first edition of the tournament was in 2009, 10 years ago. The Shanghai stadium has an eight-piece retractable roof in the shape of a magnolia flower, the symbol of the city. The tournament is the only event of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 not played in Europe or North America.[
