The tournament was founded in 1907, 119 years ago. It was a national women's tennis championship sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association and held 79 times from 1907 through 2001 at multiple locations and on various surfaces. In 2002, a women's WTA Tour event in Oklahoma City was purchased and moved to Memphis. In 2013, Memphis announced that it was restoring the tournament to the U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships. In 2026, the event returned to the WTA tour, replacing the Tennis in the Land powered by Rocket in Cleveland
tournament.
