The first edition of the tournament was in 1896, 129 years ago. It is one of the oldest tournaments in women's tennis. From 1986, the legend of German tennis Steffi GRAF dominated the tournament. Within eleven years, she won the competition nine times. After an absence of more than a decade, the event returned to the WTA calendar. However, in 2020 the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
