MPS Group Championships, Ponte Vedra Beach

Ponte Vedra Beach
The tournament was founded in 1978, 46 years ago. Since the 1980s, the North Florida stop was one of the most popular non-majors on the WTA tour and played on the green clay courts at Amelia Island. One of the most unusual matches in the tournament's history occurred in the first round of the 2002 event. Anne KREMER defeated Jennifer HOPKINS 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, with both players serving a combined 29 double faults. An investigation discovered that the service court area back line was 18 feet from the net, 3 feet short of the normal distance. WTA officials huddled after the match to discuss whether to allow the result to stand or to replay the match. Six hours later, the WTA announced that the match result would stand with Kremer as the winner.
