Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open
The tournament was founded in 2021 and became the first event of the new WTA 500 category. Abu Dhabi provided the WTA with an opportunity to start the 2021 season in a safe environment and one that would provide access for players to travel to Dubai for the Australian Open women's qualifying tournament, which was relocated from Melbourne due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
