The term "Grand Slam" was first introduced in 1933 by John Kieran of The New York Times after Jack CRAWFORD won three of four main tennis tournaments.

1962 - Rodney LAVER, Australia - won his first Grand Slam as an amateur tennis player. In addition to the four majors, Laver won 18 more titles that year, becoming the undisputed leader in world tennis. In December 1962, Rod Laver turned professional.
