The tournament was founded in 2021 and became a U.S. Open Series event for the first time in Cleveland. The last significant tennis events in Northeast Ohio occurred in the 1960s and 1970s when organizers successfully brought the Davis Cup finals to town on several occasions, the first coming in 1964.
