The first tournament was held in 1972, 53 years ago. The following year the event was not organized because it switched to a March date, and the next tournament was held in 1974. In 1984, the singles final between Ivan LENDL and Jimmy CONNORS was stopped at 6–0, 1–0 because the Ahoy Arena had received an anonymous telephone bomb threat. The police searched the venue, but no bomb was found. The match was not resumed and officially had no winner. Since 2004, former Dutch tennis player Richard KRAJICEK has been the tournament director.
