Bournemouth International
The tournament was founded in 1924, 101 years ago. It was regarded as the most important event outside the four Grand Slams in the pre-war era. On April 22, 1968, the event in Bournemouth became the first tournament of tennis’ Open era.
British player Mark COX became the first amateur player to beat a professional when he won the American Pancho GONZALEZ 0-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The final match between Ken ROSEWALL and Rod LAVER began in cold conditions and was soon delayed by rain, with Rosewall leading 3-6, 6-2, 3-0. It resumed the following day, and Rosewall won the last two sets 6-0, 6-3 to take the first official "open" title.
