The event was founded in 2022. The tournament has been issued as a single-year license for 2022 to replace Covid-scrapped Chinese events. It is the first time that the first-tier ATP Tour has returned to Seoul since 1996. Seoul hosted an ATP-level event called Seoul Open from 1987 to 1996.
