The event was founded in 1980, 43 years ago, but in 1991 the tournament was abolished. The Idea to organize a new event in Geneva was supported and promoted by Ion TIRIAC, Rainer SCHUETTLER, and Stan WAWRINKA, and in 2015 was announced that the tournament Power Horse Cup, Dusseldorf was replaced with a new event. Geneva Open returned to the Swiss city for the first time since 1991. In 2020, the event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
