The tournament was inaugurated as an ATP Challenger event in 1984, 41 years ago. Since 1984 it has been part of the ATP Tour. The tournament is entirely funded by Morocco's King Mohammed VI, and It is currently the only ATP event held in Africa. In 2020-2021, the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
