Mubadala Citi DC Open, Washington

Washington
In 1969, 56 years ago, the inaugural tournament became one of the first open professional tennis tournaments held in the United States. It was the second U.S. tournament to offer prize money after the U.S. Open did so in 1968, but it provided few amenities. With no showers or changing rooms on-site, players stayed with families near the Rock Creek Park courts and raced home in borrowed cars to shower between matches. Arthur ASHE, instrumental in tournament founding, played 11 times here and won in 1973. The event has since been part of some of the most innovative changes in tennis, including blue courts, instant replay/video boards in the stadium, and a Sunday Main Draw start. In 2020, the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
