Mubadala Citi DC Open, Washington
In 1969, 57 years ago, the inaugural tournament in Washington was one of the first in the United States to bring together the best professional tennis players.
It was the second U.S. tournament to offer prize money after the U.S. Open did so in 1968, but it provided few amenities. With no showers or changing rooms on-site, players stayed with families near the Rock Creek Park courts and raced home in borrowed cars to shower between matches.
Arthur ASHE, instrumental in tournament founding, played 11 times here and won in 1973. At the time, the event introduced many of the more innovative changes to tennis, including blue courts, instant replays/video boards in the stadium, and the start of the main draw on Sundays.
In 2020, the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2024, Sebastian KORDA won the tournament, thereby repeating his father, Petr KORDA's, achievement of winning in Washington in 1992. It is the first time that a father and son have won the same ATP tournament.
