The tournament was founded in 1948, 76 years ago. The clay court event, held every summer, has consistently improved its venue and tournament.
A bunch of Swedish players - Bjorn BORG, Mats WILANDER, and Magnus GUSTAFSSON dominated the event in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. From 2002 to 2012, the tournament in Bastad was voted by players as the ATP 250 Tournament of the Year for 11 consecutive years.
