The tournament was founded in 1993, 32 years ago. The first ATP Qatar Open was organized only for men. The event grew in popularity over the years, with several top tennis stars, including Stefan EDBERG and Boris BECKER, having played in Qatar. In 2001 Qatar also invited women players; now, it is a combined men's and women's tournament. Many of the world's best tennis players open their seasons at the tournament in Qatar, one of two ATP World Tour events held in the Middle East.
