Rolex Shanghai Masters

The first edition of the tournament was in 2009, 17 years ago. ATP officials have decided to move the Masters Series Hamburg tournament to China. Shanghai successfully hosted the ATP Finals in 2002 and 2005–2008, which inspired the tour's leaders to make this decision. In its first five years, 2009-2013, according to a vote by ATP players, the event was recognized as the best ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the year. The Shanghai stadium has an eight-piece retractable roof shaped like a magnolia flower, the city's symbol. The tournament is the only ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event not played in Europe or North America. In 2020-2022, the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
