BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells

The women's tournament became an official WTA tournament in 1989, 36 years ago, in partnership with IMG.
In 1992-1993, the women’s event was honored when Chris EVERT agreed to attach her name to the competition, making it the Matrix Essentials Evert Cup.
Before 1996, the women's event was held immediately prior, rather than concurrently, to the men's event. That situation changed when the ATP and the WTA approved combining the events. Now the tournament is one of the most prominent events in the tennis calendar for both the men's and the women’s tours. The winner of both tournaments - in Indian Wells and Miami, in one year, becomes the owner of one of the rarest achievements in tennis - the Sunshine Double. Only four female players - Steffi GRAF, Kim CLIJSTERS, Victoria AZARENKA and Iga SWIATEK have done this. In 2020, the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
