Charleston
One of the oldest professional women's tournaments was founded in 1973, 51 years ago. The early 70s were a period of uncertainty for women’s tennis, and the support from Family Circle magazine, which became the sponsor of the new tournament, was an essential step in developing women's tennis. It was the first women's tennis event to offer $100,000 in prize money and the first women’s tournament to be broadcast on network television. In 2012, the event celebrated its 40th year by naming the court in honor of Billie Jean KING. Chris EVERT holds the record for most singles titles, totaling 8. In 2020, the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
