Internazionali BNL d'Italia, Rome

Rome
The tournament was founded in 1930, 94 years ago, and the first years were held in Milan before moving to Rome. The Italian Open has also been played in Turin, Perugia, and Taranto but has always returned to Rome. In 1982, IMG, the new tournament owner, started reconstructing the old stadium Foro Italico and the women's part of the championship returned to Rome from Perugia in 1987. To ensure attendance at the women's championship at first, organizers combined season tickets for men's and women's events, allowing buyers to purchase both for 120% of the price of one. The last homegrown women’s champion was Raffaella REGGI in 1985.
