The first tournament was held in 2013, 11 years ago. Some players were so pleased with the new facilities that even after being eliminated from the tournament, many stayed in Shenzhen to train for the Australian Open, delighted by the availability of great practice courts. In 2021, the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the tournament became the first casualty of the WTA decision to suspend tournaments in China over the treatment of Shuai PENG. In 2023, the event was not held after the suspension of all WTA tournaments in China over concerns about Shuai PENG and COVID-19 restrictions.
