Volvo Car Open, Charleston

One of the oldest professional women's tournament was found in 1973, 48 years ago. The early 70’s were a period of uncertainty for women’s tennis and the support from Family Circle magazine, which became the sponsor of the new tournament, was an important step in the development of women's tennis. It was the first women's tennis event to offer a $100,000 dollars in prize money and it was the first women’s tournament to be broadcast on network television. In 2012, the event celebrated its 40th year by naming the court in honor of Billie Jean KING. Chris EVERT holds the record for most singles titles, with a total of 8. In 2020, the tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
