Abierto Mexicano Telcel, Acapulco
The tournament's first edition was in Mexico City in 1993 in 1993, 33 years ago. In 2001, the event moved to a resort hotel located in Acapulco. The hotel features eight tennis courts, including a 6,000-seat stadium court. The clay courts and the resort atmosphere of Acapulco attracted the best players to this surface. Thomas MUSTER, who won the first four tournaments in Mexico City from 1993 to 1996, and David FERRER and Rafael NADAL share the tournament record for most wins. The switch to hard courts in 2014 allowed tennis players to better prepare for the spring ATP Masters in the United States (Indian Wells and Miami). The tournament winner traditionally receives a blue sombrero and a giant silver gourd trophy.
