Rio Open

The first edition of the event was in 2014, 9 years ago. It is the first ATP Tour 500 tournament in Brazilian history and the biggest tennis tournament in South America. Since 2017, the event has had a new format as the only ATP tournament. It was a strategic decision by organizers to provide more comfort for athletes and the audience. In 2020, the tournament became the first clay-court ATP Tour event to offer electronic line calling. Also, in 2020, the event was one of the last tournaments played before the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the tournament was canceled because of Brazil's spike in COVID-19 cases.
