Rio Open
The first edition of the event was in 2014, 12 years ago. It is the first ATP Tour 500 tournament in Brazilian history and the biggest tennis tournament in South America. That year, the legendary "king of clay" Rafael NADAL won the first Rio title. Since 2017, the event has had a new format as the only ATP tournament. It was a strategic decision by organizers to provide more comfort for athletes and the audience. In 2020, the tournament became the first ATP Tour clay-court event to use electronic line calling. Also, in 2020, the event was one of the last tournaments played before the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the tournament was not held due to a spike in COVID-19 cases in Brazil.
