India's most prominent tennis event was founded in 1996, 28 years ago. It was initially held in New Delhi before moving to the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Chennai in 1997. In 2018 the tournament relocated to Pune. It is one of three tournaments held in the season's opening week. India’s Leander PAES and Mahesh BHUPATHI forged their formidable partnership in the tournament. In 2021, the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
