The event was founded in 2022. The tournament has been issued as a single-year license for 2022 to replace Covid-scrapped Chinese events. It is the first time that the first-tier ATP Tour has returned to Tuscany since 1994. From 1973 to 1994, Florence hosted an ATP-level event called Torneo Internazionale Citta di Firenze.
