The first edition of the secondary year-end professional women's tennis tournament on the WTA Tour was in 2015, 10 years ago. The WTA Elite Trophy replaces the minor WTA Tournament of Champions played from 2009 to 2014. Now the event is the competition of the 12 players (11 ranked from 9th to 19th, plus one wildcard). In 2020-2022, the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
