Mutua Madrid Open

Madrid
The first edition of the tournament was in 2002, 24 years ago. From 2002 to 2007, the tournament was played on indoor hard courts, but since 2009 it has been played on clay courts. The Central Court is located at the Manolo Santana Stadium, named after the great Spanish tennis player Manuel SANTANA, who won four Grand Slam men's singles finals in the 1960s. In 2012, the blue clay surface was officially approved. However, after discontent and threats of a boycott by leading players Rafael NADAL and Novak DJOKOVIC, the tournament returned to the traditional red clay surface in 2013. So, Roger FEDERER became the only player in history to win a men's singles title on blue clay. In 2020, the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
