Mutua Madrid Open

The first edition of the tournament was in 2002, 23 years ago. From 2002 to 2007, the tournament was played on indoor hard courts, but since 2009, the tournament has moved to clay courts. The Central Court is located at the Manolo Santana Stadium, named after the great Spanish tennis player Manuel SANTANA, who won four Grand Slam men's singles finals in the 1960s.
In 2012 blue clay surface was officially approved, but after threats of future boycotts from some players, especially Rafael NADAL and Novak DJOKOVIC, in 2013 the tournament returned to the traditional red clay surface. So, Roger FEDERER became the only player in history to win a men's singles title on blue clay. In 2020, the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
